When humans live in X type of location, is the outcome good or bad for that place? seems to generalize to a question of whether human life is a net positive or negative for the world, ecologically speaking. As you suggest, it may depend on how we behave, which depends on what kinds of eco-cultures we build.

We can compost our waste (food and body) smartly, in large quantities, collaboratively, to help it decompose as quickly as possible with fewer harmful bacteria, flies and odors. We can use fewer types of materials and chemicals in lower quantities, burn less wood, spill less gasoline. We'll drive around less when we are already where we want and need to be. When people cause environmental damage, we'll see it happen and can help stop it because we'll already be in that spot, rather than hear it reported after the fact about some far-off place. The ways we live can be harmonious with the planet we're part of.
