The Trump campaign made headlines this week for reposting a video that endorses a “unified Reich.”

It reminds me of a couple instances, a few years back, when I methodically stared into the gaping silence of Congressional Republicans faced with Trump’s racism. I want to revisit those 2019 and 2020 examples.

‘Go back’ tweet: 2019 example

In the summer of 2019, Trump tweeted that certain Democratic Congresswomen should go back where they came from. Everyone knew he was referring to four individuals.

Racist statements are always nonsensical. This one was nonsensical because three of the four women had been born in the U.S. and the fourth had become a U.S. citizen. I don’t need to pull apart his statement any further to explain why it was bad. Racism just needs to stop.

Two days later, the House voted to condemn Trump’s statement. Republicans had little interest in doing so, but the Democrats had a majority, and the vote was 240–187.
