A year ago, in March 2024, a particular feeling came over me.
It was that the various investigations of Donald Trump, primarily regarding his election interference leading up to the Capitol attack, would never result in him being held accountable. Though I never assumed these investigations would work, I’d held out some optimism that they could. By early 2024, this feeling changed, and whatever I had been reading in the news at that time produced in me the sense that the window had closed. I absorbed and metabolized something new and revised my belief: nothing was going to work. No one who committed these crimes at a high level was going to prison.
This was less of a reasoned thought and more of a feeling. It was acceptance of an outcome we tried to change but can’t.
I didn’t have an intuition at that point, eight months before the 2024 election, of who would win. I just felt sure that, regardless of who won, Trump was going to get away with everything he’d done, and the forces who backed him would continue to operate.
