On March 20, Trump ordered that organizations receiving federal funds from the Department of Education must comply with his policies. He’s simultaneously saying that the Department of Education should shut down, but that’s another dimension of this issue.

This means they must end any “illegal discrimination obscured under the label ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ or similar terms,” as well as end any “programs promoting gender ideology.” This order is called “Improving Education Outcomes by Empowering Parents, States, and Communities.”

For reference, here’s the definition of gender ideology provided two months earlier in Trump’s Inauguration Day “Defending Women” order. There, he said it included the idea of “a vast spectrum of genders that are disconnected from one’s sex,” the practice of referring to a person’s “self-assessed gender identity” in place of “the biological category of sex,” and the demand that “all institutions of society” acknowledge the concept of changing sex.
