Transphobia, Overt or Underhanded

Let me tell you about two articles published last June. The first is a case of overt transphobia. If you can recognize overt transphobia, you can skip that part. The second is a response to the original article. It was written more subtly but was nevertheless equally transphobic.

Being As Visibly Transphobic As Possible

On June 14, 2022, Tablet published Jennifer Bilek’s article, “The Billionaire Family Pushing Synthetic Sex Identities (SSI).” (No need for me to link to it. It’s easy to find.)

Bilek’s main scaremonger in this article is the “drive of wealthy elites to deconstruct who and what we are” for their own “profit,” “personal obsessions,” or “the human temptation to play God.” She’s scaremongering about the doctor, not the monster, to use a Frankenstein analogy.

Bilek says that USAmericans have had, and should continue to have, a “dimorphic definition of sex”: i.e., male and female, distinct from each other and not on a spectrum, which in turn yields a distinction between gay and straight. “Sexual…
