This reminds me of Trump's tweets on May 31, 2019 in which he falsely claimed that his administration had a "global campaign to decriminalize homosexuality" (he was referring to a dinner party that Richard Grenell hosted). He promised to "stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison, or even execute individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation." It was the first time he'd typed "LGBT" in a tweet, he didn't coordinate his statement with any queer advocacy groups, he didn't attend any Pride events that summer, and, just days later, his administration ordered U.S. embassies not to fly the Pride flag, plainly the very opposite of "stand[ing] in solidarity" internationally. He'd never really intended to support queer people — that part was a lie. He was strategically pretending to support queer people to stoke Islamophobia, all the while himself contributing to anti-queer sentiment and policy. The hand-waving meant: Don't look at me being homophobic, look at Muslims being homophobic! It was a whataboutism. You gave me a new name for it: Homonationalism. Thank you!
