That's a valid approach! Indeed, most of the ignorance I come across, I simply don't mention at all, as I'd like to avoid amplifying it.
But sometimes I have something specific to say, or there's another situation. In this case—though I didn't say so in the article—what happened was that, a couple weeks ago, a commenter on Medium told me I shouldn't use the word "transphobe" because it's an insult that really just means "heretic." When I Googled the phrase "transphobe means heretic," I discovered this author who's promoting that idea.
The tiny way in which I hope this article is helpful to LGBTQ people & allies is:
When someone speaks against LGBTQ identity and tries to shield themselves from criticism by claiming that words like homophobe & transphobe are synonyms for "heretic"—if they use that very specific language—you can say, "You're repeating something a guy named O'Neill says. I'm familiar with the idea. Thanks but no thanks." :)
