Starred product ratings are purely an artifact of capitalism. The only thing they're good for is for having a really simple data point to plug into a huge system that wants to sell more stuff to you and others. This made sense for 1990s Amazon, for example. But today, there are so many other forms of online surveillance and Big Data, and there's no need for those companies to rely on us to performatively cough up "stars" to tell them if we liked our purchase.
