Sounds right... Maybe the threshold is based on how popular the idea is? If it's an idea floated by your own three-year-old (and no one else), you might be able to ignore it and thereby silently imply "this is not how we are to participate in human belonging" and very soon the three-year-old stops saying that thing, but if a hundred newspaper editors across the country are planning their op-ed pages based on that idea, at some point you have to say out loud, "this isn't real."
