Basic Differences Between Traditional Publishing and Self-Publishing

The trade-off between “traditional publishing” and “self-publishing,” and the debate about it, are familiar to most authors.

Traditional Publishing

When a publishing house accepts your manuscript, they typically do a lot of work: editing your words, fact-checking, hiring consultants for the subject matter, formatting the book, finding a cover artist, printing and shipping copies, making sure it lands on bookstore shelves, doing market research, advertising it, finding interviewers and book reviewers, and organizing author readings.
