Today is the publication of Donald Trump v. The United States: Inside the Struggle to Stop a President by New York Times reporter Michael Schmidt.
In this book, Schmidt focuses on two men, James Comey and Donald McGahn, who “undertook a mission to stop a president because they feared he could damage himself, the country, and the presidency.” They worried about never being able to determine whether Trump “was acting in the interest of the country, his ego, his family business, or Russia.” Although their personal strategy of quiet interference is uncommon — especially as the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have considered it of paramount importance “to keep the perception of politics out of their work” during “the forty years since the Watergate scandal” — hyperpartisanship infected even these ranks in the Trump era and forced individuals to make political choices.
