Here’s an anti-LGBTQI+ action of the Trump regime. It was issued over a week ago, and I don’t want to let it pass without acknowledging it.

Shortly after Biden took office in 2021, he promised that the US would “pursue an end to discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or sex characteristics” and “lead by the power of our example in the cause of advancing the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons around the world.”

The document, Memorandum on Advancing the Human Rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex Persons Around the World, had sections with these titles:

  1. Combating Criminalization of LGBTQI+ Status or Conduct Abroad
  2. Protecting Vulnerable LGBTQI+ Refugees and Asylum Seekers
  3. Foreign Assistance to Protect Human Rights and Advance Nondiscrimination
  4. Swift and Meaningful U.S. Responses to Human Rights Abuses of LGBTQI+ Persons Abroad
