In 2003, when the U.S. Supreme Court was deciding whether to decriminalize gay sex in Lawrence v. Texas, the Alliance Defending Freedom (then the Alliance Defense Fund) submitted an amicus brief arguing that Texas should be allowed to keep it criminalized.

Mike Johnson, then the ADF spokesperson, wrote that argument.

Twenty years later, he has been chosen as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Johnson also wrote for the Shreveport, Louisiana Times, where in 2004 he said that tolerating gay people would lead to tolerating pedophiles and to allowing someone to “marry his pet.” That same year, he referred to gay people as living an “‘inherently unnatural” lifestyle that could take down “the entire democratic system.” The following year, he wrote: “Your race, creed, and sex are what you are, while homosexuality and cross-dressing are things you do…we don’t give special protections for every person’s bizarre choices.” (These sources were recapped by CNN.)
