Regarding the idea that “if we rich Westerners really cared about the Amazon…we’d buy it,” i.e. someone would

“acquire ecosystems that are crucial for climate change, like the Amazon…put them in trust for perpetuity…give indigenous people the jobs of being their caretakers and guardians and patrols…use some of our looted wealth to protect and safeguard and nourish the planet, for the very first time in history”:

I cannot help but recall Trump’s spontaneous proposal just a few days ago for the US to buy Greenland. He wants Greenland because the Arctic is melting and that land therefore becomes strategic. He wants to buy the result of climate change. Because that’s the old model of thinking: “We” [rich men] want capitalist industrialization and therefore we want everything that that system has produced including whatever environmental conditions everyone is left with. Whatever capitalist industrialization produces is, logically, the “spoils,” the “proceeds.” Even if it’s a warmed planet. That’s what we ordered, that’s therefore what we wanted. We asked for the fries to be microwaved. Therefore, we must have wanted soggy fries. We’ll pay for them and come back asking for more sogginess.

Investing in preventing adverse environmental conditions requires a significant shift in worldview.
