In Trump’s plea for ‘my shoes’, I heard echoes of ‘The Wizard of Oz’

Two weeks ago, when a 20-year-old on a roof shot at Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally and grazed his ear with a bullet, Secret Service agents jumped onstage, yelled “Get down!” and crouched with Trump behind the podium.

One minute later, as Trump rose, his face reached the microphone again and the first thing he was heard to say was: “Let me get my shoes.”

The Secret Service escorted Trump away for medical attention. A black shoe was left on the red-carpeted stage. It was photographed by Jabin Botsford for the Washington Post.

The next day, Trump told the New York Post: “The agents hit me so hard that my shoes fell off, and my shoes are tight.” This is…
