Pamela Paul Isn’t Sympathetic to Trans Adults Either

Yes, Republicans threaten the rights of trans adults. No, I don’t believe Pamela Paul really cares.

A couple days ago, in less than 450 words in the New York Times, Pamela Paul wrote about the Cass Review, “a four-year review of the National Health Service’s gender medicine program for minors in England.”

The review matters, Paul tells us, because England’s National Health Service “will no longer offer puberty-blocking drugs except for patients enrolled in clinical trials and will offer cross-sex hormones to children only with extreme caution,” becoming the fifth European country to restrict such healthcare.

Here, I won’t discuss the Cass Review itself. I’m not a healthcare expert. Lots of people are talking about the Cass Review from various perspectives. (As one reading suggestion, TransActual UK has something to say about it.)

Nor is Pamela Paul a healthcare expert, so I’m interested in talking about what Pamela Paul is talking about when she’s talking about the Cass Review.

Paul says the review is good news “for parents concerned about the quality of care for their children.” She’s not congratulating the organized movement against trans people’s existence, you see—she wouldn’t use that…
