Now I'm thinking of the country's name, "the United States." The federal government is called "federal" because it binds artificial entities called "states," and so it tends to protect the interests of the States of America, not always the actual People of America. Just one example: The Electoral College gives votes to each state for being a state. People vote, which for some reason gets reprocessed into the idea that "the state votes for the people." Sadly. To all our detriment.
