Just today, someone left a comment on one of my Medium stories, accusing me of playing a "language game" with the word transphobic because I referred to Joyce as someone who does transphobia. The commenter informed me that "transphobic" means feeling hate or causing intentional harm; apparently, in the absence of such proof of another human being's state of mind, I am not permitted to use the word to describe anyone or anything ever. (Wow, have I heard that a few times before.) Anyhow, this commenter alleged that, because I'm playing a "language game" with the word transphobia (by employing a definition that isn't theirs and/or using it to negatively label someone they admire? because we disagree, that means I'm gaming vocabulary for points?), evidently I have a "campaign" to posit myself as a religious authority who "enforces" my way of thinking, declares all freethinking dissenters to be "heretics," and has an "agenda" to "destroy" everyone else. And, like—dude, if I had a vitriolic agenda to literally destroy cis people, I wouldn't do it linguistically by saying "Helen Joyce is transphobic!" Cis people would know I was destroying them if I were destroying them 😜
