Trans Teens Are 3x More Likely to Attempt Suicide
“Transgender identities”—according to three researchers in a 2018 article in Pediatrics, a journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics—aren’t usually mentioned in U.S. autopsy reports, and thus no one has a good estimate of how many U.S. transgender adolescents die by suicide. But researchers can ask living adolescents about “suicide behaviors (eg, ideation and attempts),” and when these researchers did that, they found that transgender adolescents were three times more likely than cisgender adolescents to report having attempted suicide.
Specifically, among transgender and nonbinary adolescents, “between 30% and 51%” (the range depends whether they are trans girls, nonbinary children, or trans boys) said they had at least once attempted suicide. Among cisgender adolescents, 10% of boys and 18% of girls said they had attempted suicide.
