I'm also from the Northeast US and never knew of this term either. I just learned about it from this article. There might be people in the Northeast who've heard it directly or have heard of it, but I personally was unaware. It's important to learn about different manifestations of racism so I can be aware of different experiences people today may have had in their regions and communities and also to understand history in general.
