I was born with an orthopedic problem in my hip. When I was 25, I had a full-time service job on my feet, and it was really hard. I lasted six months. The final straw wasn't directly due to my hip, but it was health-related: They didn't let me have sick days when I was diagnosed with mono and had a high fever and overall joint pain. So I gave two weeks notice and obediently worked through the two-week nightmare of the fever. (I felt recovered from symptoms on my last day at work.) I had desk jobs after that and nonetheless was diagnosed with arthritis in both feet at 42. I couldn't work any job on my feet now. I wouldn't try. Workers need a living wage, affordable healthcare, and accommodations like a mat to stand on.
