The NYT story, 15 paragraphs in, says "dozens of parents...told The Times they felt villainized..." They demand that teachers tell them everything about their kids' sexual/gender identities "unless there is evidence of physical abuse at home." Reading between the lines, the parents' argument is that they ought to be able to say/do anything to their kids, short of whipping them with a belt, because in their minds, only physical abuse is abusive or in any way problematic. The reporter doesn't examine that further. A total lack of imagination displayed here (by the parents and/or reporter and/or editors) about non-physical forms of repression, and how it has all kinds of consequences. Like attending a church that tells you you're going to hell and sends you to "conversion therapy." Or starting a job and credit history in a name you know you don't want to use. The consequences can be physical too, like not getting sexual/health needs addressed, e.g., not getting PrEP— The NYT here is manifesting a total lack of interest in how LGBTQ teens can grow up to live their own lives with basic safety and support. They're just parroting an argument, like, Well, if you can't prove I'm hitting my child with a belt, stay out of it, and if you speak to my child, you have to report to me everything they say— As written, this story has got a missing dimension, or two, or three.
