I don’t believe it is true that the Left says: “High heel rights for men first!” The Left does not tell the Right: “You must support us, in our cultural aims, which you probably don’t share, whether or not we support you” in “things like jobs, families, retirement, savings.” Everyone cares about jobs and families, the existence of which are not a Left vs. Right issue; politicians, thinkers, and activists do propose comprehensive economic plans in accordance with left-wing political ideas. Even those of us who are, to use your phrase, “pangender asexual magical being[s]” are well aware that we have basic material needs in addition to the psychological/social/political need for respect and dignity regarding our magic.
It simply isn’t true that we can have a truly great, successful discourse about jobs, family, and money without also prioritizing and embedding the notion that everyone — including transgender people—deserves respect and dignity. These discourses aren’t Phase 1 and Phase 2. Both have to be done simultaneously.
First of all: Jobs, family, and money already exist. What specific economic milestone needs to be achieved before transgender people are allowed to live openly? Are you proposing a calendar date for transgender people to be allowed out of the closet? Or is this a clever way of saying: Basically never?
Second: If the ultimate goal is, truly and sincerely, to have a society where transgender people can live openly, why would you spend Phase 1 (Jobs, Family, Money) building a closet for transgender people, just to tear down the closet in Phase 2 (Allowing Transgender People To Live Openly and Ask For Respect and Dignity)?
It really is possible to use respectful language for transgender people while advocating for better economic policy. Both of these activities benefit everyone, regardless of identity, ideology, or awareness of receiving benefits. Solidarity means caring about the feelings of the people you are trying to help materially. It means doing both at the same time. Mocking transgender people, blaming our existence for lost elections, and ordering us back in the closet isn’t “solidarity.”
