I do not recall saying anywhere that people can’t have nuanced positions. (I believe my own positions are nuanced.)

Nor do I recall saying “nothing counts” if people aren’t in full agreement with each other. (I don’t even understand what that means. I voted Democrat in this election without agreeing with everything the Democratic Party says and does, and I believe that my vote counts despite my various disagreements.)

I’ve written several hundred essays about the anti-trans movement.

Here are three that are relevant:

In 2022, I argued that current political discourse about keeping trans women out of sports typically has nothing to do with sports and is instead intended to delegitimize trans people and constrain how we live.

This spring, I wrote about the 1936 Berlin Olympics after reading a new history book by Michael Waters, which I highly recommend if you are interested in the topic of trans people in sports and the discourse thereof, which has been going on for nearly a century now.

This summer, I discussed one effect of the discourse: In Nassau County, NY, a local Republican leader banned girls and women who are trans from playing recreational sports on girls’ and women’s teams at public facilities, even if their teammates would be happy to have them. This same guy is organizing about 100 local people with gun permits to serve as “provisional emergency special deputy sheriffs,” i.e., he’s stoking anti-trans suspicion and promoting the social exclusion of trans people while simultaneously militarizing the population. You can plainly see how the combination of those two policies is contrary to trans people’s safety. If you care about trans people's safety, this is important to spend some time thinking about.

I agree that it’s important for Harris to be elected, for LGBTQ people’s sake (as I explained a couple days ago, below) and for everyone’s sakes. Yes, it is absolutely critical that Trump not be elected again.

Of course I will have some disagreements with every other person on this planet, including my husband (who wants me to come to lunch right this moment, whereas I would like to continue typing this note). Our differences in how we think are what makes us all individuals.

So I acknowledge the fact that people are different.

But I do not have to “accept” everyone’s beliefs about what rights I should and shouldn’t have.
