The following injuries, I feel.

I perceive…

…that pirates ate most of the Galapagos tortoises in the 1800s, and some of those 14 species went extinct, and of one species called “Fantastic,” there’s only one individual left, and she had to survive a volcano just to be here today.

…that the last seven years were the warmest on record, or the last eight, actually, for the oceans, and the oceans are the most acidic they’ve ever been.

…that half the coral in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is already gone, and the heating ocean continues to “bleach” coral faster than it can recover, which is a problem, since as much as a third of all marine species depend on these reefs.

…that we try to find hope in “Not Everything is Dead” articles about sea bugs that can live on plastic.

…that we try to visit the world’s tallest tree, and in so doing, we trample its habitat.
