I agree that "cancel culture" is imaginary, and yesterday I also wrote a Medium article about the same NYT editorial. It didn't occur to me, though, that — as you pointed out — some media outlets promote the concept of "cancel culture" not only to drive clicks in general but, as part of a more targeted marketing strategy, to cultivate and retain a specific readership.
