Becoming Excellent Curators of Hope
When we ponder what’s possible, we help to build the future.
Today I am thinking about two ideas from Nikki Stern and Rohit Bhargava that teach me to hope better.
What Kind of Hope is Most Helpful?
Nikki Stern lists these questions in the first chapter of her 2012 book Hope in Small Doses: Reasonable Happiness in Unreasonable Times. She writes:
1. What is hope?
2. Are there different kinds of hope?
3. Is hope good or bad — or both?
4. Who has hope and who doesn’t?
5. What is the relationship of hope to well-being?
6. What happens when we lose hope?
7. How is hope related to meaning or purpose?
8. Is hope necessary?
After presenting this list, she says she can phrase her question in a more emotionally true, direct way. She really wants to know what kind of hope is most helpful: to her, to her friends, to the world.
How Do We Become Excellent Curators of Hope?
I found some answers in an unexpected place: Rohit Bhargava’s “5 Habits of Trend Curators.” I learned about them by reading his Non-Obvious 2017: How To Think Different, Curate Ideas and Predict The Future. Bhargava releases a new title in his Non-Obvious series every year, and you can hear him discuss the list in this video…
