Five years ago, I doorknocked against the Massachusetts bathroom bill. We were hoping that maybe 80% of Mass. voters would support trans people and that the right-wing would conclude that this type of fight wasn't worth their money. Indeed the bill didn't pass (because Mass. is just about the bluest state), but the vote was only about 2/3 to 1/3. At that moment, I saw it in the face of a more seasoned activist. She knew what was coming for other states.
