‘We Do Ourselves No Favor to Pretend Otherwise’
Biden’s speech in Philadelphia
Speaking from Philadelphia, “this place where it all began,” President Biden asserted on September 1 that “we’re all created equal.” That’s the national idea, he said.
He said he wanted to address the nation about the fact that “equality and democracy are under assault. We do ourselves no favor to pretend otherwise.” He said it’s important for him to speak “about the threats we face, about the power we have in our own hands to meet these threats and about the incredible future that lies in front of us, if only we choose it.”
The threat comes from “MAGA Republicans.” These are people who do not “respect the Constitution,” “believe in the rule of law,” “recognize the will of the people,” nor “accept the results of a free election.”
These ‘MAGA Republicans’ Are About Ten Percent of the Country
What segment of the U.S. population is this? As Philip Bump paraphrased for the Washington Post the next day, it refers to “rejection of the 2020 election, embrace of candidates who similarly reject the results, approval of the Capitol riot and a willingness to consider violence as a political tool.”
