When I was small, we had the Free to Be…You and Me children’s cassette tape in our house. (I’ve written about it before.)

One of the numbers was a mini-fable: “Ladies First.”

For those who don’t have three minutes right now to listen to it:

In this story, a little girl develops the affectation of saying “Ladies first!” because she believes she’s delicate and special, and this annoys all her friends. Naturally, when hungry tigers tie up the kids and ask whom they should eat first, the answer is—

That’s all.

The moral is that it’s one thing to be who you are and it’s another to insist on “me first!” to grab things you want. If you were to apply the principle of “me first!” consistently and fairly, eventually you’d end up with stuff you don’t want.
